Unbalanced Diet is one of the biggest reason One in Five Deaths Worldwide

One in five deaths in the world in 2019, or 11 million, was linked to a poor diet, with over consumption of salt, sugar or meat and insufficient intakes of whole grains and fruits, according to a study published 
Almost all of these deaths were caused by cardiovascular disease , and the rest by cancer and type 2 diabetes , often associated with obesity and lifestyles (sedentary lifestyle, unbalanced diet), according to this study.
In January, the medical journal had published a first study carried out by the same scientists. She advocated halving global consumption of red meat and sugar and doubling that of fruits, vegetables and nuts to achieve a healthy diet and good for the environment.
The study released Thursday covers 195 countries. According to his conclusions, the main deficiencies in the world diet concern nuts and seeds, milk and whole grains. Conversely, sugary drinks, processed meat and salt are consumed too much.

No causal link

"This study shows what many of us have thought for years: poor nutrition is responsible for more deaths than any other risk factor in the world," said one of the authors, Christopher Murray. He heads the Institute of Metrology and Health Assessment (IHME, University of Washington), an organization funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. In comparison, smoking kills around 7 million people each year according to the World Health Organization.
The study highlights large disparities between countries. Those with the highest rates of malnutrition-related deaths are Uzbekistan and Afghanistan. Conversely, those with the lowest proportion are Israel, France, Spain and Japan.
The authors recognize, however, limitations to their study. Among them, the fact that the link between diet and death cannot be established with as much certainty as in the case of other risk factors, such as tobacco.
